דברים אינם קורים מבלי משים

וכך מן הסתם לא בלי משים פניתי שמאלה, אל רחוב שאף פעם לא נכנסתי אליו.
זה היה בפסח, כשחזרתי לאזור ההוא, לבדוק את הכאב, אם כבר באמת התגברתי עליו, לאותו כביש שממנו רואים ממול את בית החולים. ידעתי שהיא כבר עזבה, שבה אל עירה ובכל זאת הזכרונות עוד היו, אם כי בעמום. עברתי את גן המפלצת והמשכתי לצעוד, עם התרמיל הקטן, בצד הנגדי לצד שצעדתי בו באותו ערב דצמבר סגרירי ורחוק, ובאותו צד שבו, אז חשבתי שנדמה לי, ראיתי את חפא.
כמו פלישה של זמן אחר ששכחתי והדחקתי, בהבזק של הלא-יתכן, שידעתי שהצילה את חיי או לפחות את שפיותי, שבעיקר באותם ימים, עמדה תחת התקפה כבדה מבחוץ. ובכל זאת, לא באמת האמנתי שחפא היה שם.
אבל כשפניתי שמאלה ונכנסתי לשכונת קרית מנחם, חפא עמד בתחנת אוטובוס, כאילו טבעי לו לעמוד שם והתנהג כאילו הוא רגיל לראות אותי עובר שם כל יום, למרות שעברו 7 שנים מאז שעזב אותנו באופן מסתורי.

עלינו במעלה רח' מקסיקו, והוא סיפר כבדרך אגב שהוא גר כאן בסביבה בזמן האחרון, ומדבריו השתמע שלא לבד. ידעתי על כמה בנות ובנים מאלה שהיו בחבורה לשעבר, שידיעה כזאת תסב להם אכזבה, גם היום. אני קיויתי שלא עזב את כל הדברים שבאותם הימים היה מספר לנו עליהם, והוא כמענה למחשבתי התחיל לדבר על הכת.
"בליבת הדברים ישנה כת שמאמינה בחייזרים", הוא אמר, "מאמינה וגם מפחדת. והפחד הזה מזין אותה, ועוזר לה לרצות באופן אובססיבי שליטה וגם להשיג אותה ובמקומות שלא תאמין. וכך היא שולטת על הרבה עמדות של כח, למרות שנמצאים בה די מעט אנשים".
"כמה?"
"כמה מאות כאן בארץ, אבל הם נמצאים במקומות הכי חזקים. בארץ אלה המערכות הבטחוניות-צבאיות, בתי החולים המרכזיים, אוניברסיטאות, וגם העולם התחתון. ובמקביל, הם נמצאים בעוד מדינות של המערב, בעיקר בארגוני הביון, וגם בארצות של הגוש הקומוניסטי, מבחינתם כל ההבדל הזה בין מערב ומזרח הוא לא ממשי, והם בקשר אחד עם השני דרך רשתות מחשבים, וגם דרך טלפתיה".
באותם ימים מסך ברזל חילק את העולם, 'הגוש הקומוניסטי' נראה לרוב האנשים הסבירים כמו ישות שתתקיים לנצח, ואינטרנט היה נדמה לרוב האנשים חזון בדיוני.

"דבר חשוב אחד שאתה צריך לדעת הוא, שהאמונה שלהם היא בלי קשר בכלל לדבר האמיתי. היא לא נובעת מזה שחייזרים קיימים ואם היא פוגשת את המציאות – זה מקרה בינגו, כי אין שום קשר בין האמונה שלהם – לבין י ד י ע ה".
חפא סיפר לי שהאמונה של הכת נולדה בשנות ה50, והכת הזאת היא רק אחת מקבוצות של כח שיש להן אמונות שונות, שאנשיה תופסים עמדות כח בליבת המערכת. היא גם לא הגדולה ביותר, אבל היא אחת החזקות, ואנשים אינם מפסיקים להצטרף לשורותיה, גם אם במספרים קטנים בינתיים. יש לאנשיה כקבוצה וגם כבודדים, השפעה כריזמטית והם יודעים לחלחל את רעיונותיהם למקומות, בלי שמקורם יוודע. הם אוהבים את האלמוניוּת וחלקם אפילו רואים בה חלק מיסודות הדת שלהם, לא רק אמצעי טקטי או אסטרטגי.

אף פעם לא שאלתי את חפא אם הדברים שהוא מספר מועברים לו דרך חבריו היודעים הכל על כדור הארץ, או שגילה אותם בכח כישוריו האישיים. ותמיד דברים שאמר הוכיחו עצמם כנכונים, ותמיד הוא הפתיע אותנו, ונשמע שהוא לא איבד את זה ב7 השנים שחלפו.

"ובגלל שהם טובים בטלפתיה, אך לא רק בגלל זה, אנחנו צריכים להשמר מהם" אמר חפא חפא וסיפר שאחת האמונות שהם מאמינים בה באופן חזק, היא שהחייזרים באו להשמיד את עולם האדם, ולכן הם מפיצים וירוסים שמטרתם "לנגף את המין האנושי מבפנים, להביא עליו ניוון וכליון", ואת הוירוסים החייזריים נושאים בין השאר, כך אמונת הכת, 'אנשים חלשים' ו'מעוותים' ומלבדם יש אנשים בעלי מבנה נפשי ושכלי ('גן בוגדני' קוראים לכך אנשי הכת) שהם בעלי פוטנציאל לשמש משתפי פעולה ומפיצים מרצון של "הוירוס החייזרי". אמרתי שקראתי על כך בספרי מד"ב, וחפא אמר שידוע לו על מספר סופרי מד"ב החברים בכת, אם כי לא ידע לזהותם בשמם, והם, אמר, "עושים את פרסומם לשם שמים".
"ומה שאנשי הכת עסוקים בו ב10-15 השנים האחרונות", סיפר חפא שעה שרח' מקסיקו התעקל והמשיך לעלות, "הוא נסיון לתת ביסוס מדעי לאמונות שלהם דרך חקר החייזרים ה א מ י ת י י ם שאותם הם מנסים לצוד.
הם צריכים את הביסוס המדעי כדי לקבל תקציבים והכרה רחבה ככל האפשר, וכמובן גם הסכמה של האחרים לשליטתם, כי עדיין, למרות ההשפעה הרבה שיש להם על האחרים, לא כולם מאמינים באמונה שלהם, הם עדיין מרגישים את עצמם ב'ארון' ולא מדברים על האמונה שלהם בגלוי כדי שלא ייחשבו לא שפויים, וגם זה מגביל אותם, לפחות בתקופה הזאת. ביסוס מדעי, הם מאמינים, יאפשר להם לקבל את התקציבים ואת ההכרה שתאפשר להם 'לנקות את החברה' מן הוירוס, בצורה מלאה, על פי הבנתם.
האנשים שראינו בעמק עם הג'יפ הלבן למשל, שייכים לכת הזאת, ומה שראינו הוא מכון עצמאי של מחקר אמיתי, שאינו מקבל שום תקציב של אוניברסיטה כרגע. וכל הג'יפים הלבנים ההם, גם כן, שייכים להם.

"צריך להודות שהאנשים האלה די אידיאליסטים", אמרתי.

Things don’t happen by accident.

And so, presumably not by accident, I turned left onto a street I had never entered before.
It was during Passover, when I returned to that area to test the pain — to check if I had truly overcome it — to the same road from which you can see the hospital across the way. I knew she had already left, gone back to her city, and yet the memories were still there, though blurred. I passed the Monster Garden and kept walking, with my small backpack, on the opposite side of the road from the one I had walked on that distant, gloomy December evening — and on the same side where, at the time, I thought I had seen Chapa.
It was like an invasion from another time that I had forgotten and repressed, in a flash of the impossible — something I knew had saved my life, or at least my sanity, which in those days especially was under heavy attack from the outside. And yet, I didn’t really believe that Chapa had been there.
But when I turned left and entered the Kiryat Menachem neighborhood, Chapa was standing at a bus stop, as if it were the most natural thing in the world for him to be there. He behaved as though he was used to seeing me pass by every day, even though seven years had passed since he had mysteriously left us.

We walked up Mexico Street, and he casually mentioned that he had been living in the area recently. From his words, it was clear he wasn’t living alone. I knew that for some of the guys and girls from the old group, this news would still be disappointing even today. I hoped he hadn’t abandoned all the things he used to tell us about back then, and as if in response to my thought, he began talking about the cult.

“At the core of things, there is a cult that believes in aliens,” he said. “They believe, and they are also afraid. And this fear feeds them, and helps them desire control obsessively — and to achieve it in places you wouldn’t believe. That’s how they control many positions of power, even though there are relatively few of them.”
“How many?”
“A few hundred here in the country, but they are in the strongest places. In Israel, it’s the security-military systems, the central hospitals, universities, and also the underworld. At the same time, they are present in other Western countries, mainly in intelligence organizations, and also in the countries of the Communist Bloc. To them, the whole difference between East and West isn’t really real. They are in contact with each other through computer networks, and also through telepathy.”
In those days, the Iron Curtain still divided the world. To most reasonable people, the “Communist Bloc” seemed like an entity that would exist forever, and the internet sounded like a science-fiction vision.
“One important thing you need to know,” Chapa continued, “is that their belief has no connection whatsoever to actual reality. It doesn’t stem from the fact that aliens exist, and if it ever meets reality — that’s just a lucky bingo. There is simply no connection between their belief and real knowledge.”
Chapa told me that the cult’s belief was born in the 1950s, and that this cult is only one of several power groups that hold different beliefs, whose members occupy key positions at the heart of the system. It’s not the largest, but it is one of the strongest. People keep joining its ranks, even if only in small numbers for now. As a group and as individuals, its members have a charismatic influence, and they know how to infiltrate their ideas into places without the source ever being known. They love anonymity, and some of them even see it as part of the foundations of their religion, not just a tactical or strategic tool.I never asked Chapa whether the things he told us were passed on to him by his friends who supposedly knew everything about the Earth, or whether he had discovered them through the power of his own abilities. But the things he said always proved to be true. He always surprised us, and it sounded like he hadn’t lost “it” in the seven years that had passed.
“And because they’re good at telepathy — though not only because of that — we need to be careful of them,” Chapa said. He told me that one of the strong beliefs they hold is that the aliens came to destroy the human world. Therefore, they spread viruses whose purpose is “to infect the human race from within, to bring upon it degeneration and destruction.” According to the cult’s belief, these alien viruses are carried, among others, by ‘weak people’ and ‘the deformed.’ In addition, there are people with a certain mental and intellectual structure (which the cult members call a ‘traitorous gene’) who have the potential to serve as willing collaborators and spreaders of “the alien virus.”
I said I had read about this in science fiction books. Chapa replied that he knew of several science fiction writers who were members of the cult (though he couldn’t name them), and that they, he said, “are doing their publicity for the sake of Heaven.”
“And what the people of the cult have been busy with for the last 10–15 years,” Chapa continued as Mexico Street curved and continued to climb, “is an attempt to give scientific backing to their beliefs through the study of real aliens — the ones they are trying to hunt.”
“They need the scientific foundation in order to receive budgets and the broadest possible recognition, and of course also the agreement of others to their control. Because even though they have a great deal of influence over others, not everyone believes in their faith. They still feel they are ‘in the closet’ and don’t speak openly about their beliefs so they won’t be considered insane. This also limits them, at least for now. They believe that scientific backing will allow them to receive the budgets and the recognition that will enable them to ‘cleanse society’ of the virus completely, according to their understanding.”
“The people we saw in the valley with the white jeep, for example — they belong to this cult. What we saw was an independent institute for real research, which currently receives no university funding. And all those white jeeps also belong to them.”

“You have to admit that these people are quite idealistic,” I said.
“Yes,” Chapa agreed with me, “and maybe that’s what makes them even more dangerous.”
