בקושי רואים אותו, אבל הוא האביזר הכי חשוב לכל הנוסעים והמשתגרים אל החלל.
עד שהמציאו אותו, נאלצו כל נוסעי החלל ללבוש חליפות חלל עבות מחוברות לבלוני חמצן כבדים, אם לא רצו להיחנק כשהם יוצאים מהחללית אל עולם חדש.
המזקק, בגירסה הממוזערת שלו (ישנם גם מזקקים המותאמים לבועות ענק על כוכבי לכת ואף בחלל) מושתל לתוך אפך כמו עגיל קטנטן, או (כפי שהעדפתי בדרך כלל) שאתה נושא אותו איתך בבקבוק נטען ממנו אתה שותה מעת לעת (לפעמים זה מספיק כדי לסנן את הרעלים, לא בכל מקום, במקומות שרמת הרעילות היא גבוהה בשבילך אתה חייב לשתול אותו באף), מזהה את סוג האטמוספרה שאתה רגיל לנשום, וכאשר אתה מגיע לכוכב שהאטמוספרה בו שונה, הוא מסנן אוטומטית את הגזים הרעילים, או הופך אותם לגזים ידידותיים לנשימה.
אסור לשכוח את הרפילים הזעירים שבתוכם נמצא החומר המסנן, אותם ניתן לקנות בכל תחנת נחיתה והמראה של חלליות. אני קניתי כאלה ברגע שיצאנו אל התחנה הראשונה שלנו בראש הסוס. עוד מעט הם ייגמרו לי וצריך לקנות חבילה חדשה. קל מאד לאבד אותם מפני שהם קטנים במיוחד, ורצוי לשמור אותם בכיס מיוחד בתוך ווסט הנוסעים.

חפא סיפר לי כשנסענו לפגוש את השליט הכחול, שסינון האטמוספרות הוא התעשייה הרחבה והפורחת ביותר שקיימת בפדרציה.

Atmospheric Refiner

You can barely see it, but it is the most important accessory for all travelers and teleporters into space.

Until it was invented, all space travelers had to wear thick spacesuits connected to heavy oxygen tanks if they didn’t want to suffocate when stepping out of the spaceship onto a new world.

The refiner, in its miniaturized version (there are also refiners adapted for giant bubbles on planets and even in space), is implanted into your nose like a tiny piercing, or (as I usually preferred) carried with you in a rechargeable bottle from which you drink from time to time (sometimes this is enough to filter out toxins, but not everywhere; in places where toxicity levels are too high for you, you must implant it in your nose). It identifies the type of atmosphere you are accustomed to breathing, and upon reaching a planet with a different atmosphere, it automatically filters out toxic gases or converts them into breath-friendly ones.

One must not forget the tiny refills containing the filtering material, which can be purchased at any spaceship landing and departure station. I bought some the moment we stepped out at our first station in the Horsehead Nebula. They are about to run out soon, and a new pack needs to be bought. They are extremely easy to lose because of their tiny size, so it is best to keep them in a special pocket inside the traveler’s vest.
