"אנשי השם" (1) (1) "Men of the Name"

וַיְהִי בִּימֵי הַקֵּיסָרִים הָרִאשׁוֹנִים, כַּאֲשֶׁר רוֹמִי יָשְׁבָה עַל שֶׁבַע הַגְּבָעוֹת וְחָשְׁבָה בְּלִבָּהּ כִּי אֵין לְמַעְלָה מִמֶּנָּה, וַיֵּרְדוּ שְׁלִיחֵי הָרְקִיעִים אֶל גְּבוּלוֹת יְהוּדָה. וְלֹא יָרְדוּ בְּגִלּוּי שְׁכִינָה וּבְאֵשׁ אוֹכֶלֶת, כִּי אִם בִּלְחִישָׁה וּבְסוֹד, דֶּרֶךְ חֲלוֹמוֹת, דֶּרֶךְ חֶזְיוֹנוֹת, דֶּרֶךְ בְּנֵי אָדָם שֶׁנָּגְעָה בָּהֶם רוּחַ.

וַיַּחְלְקוּ אֶת הַיֶּדַע בֵּין כִּתּוֹת רַבּוֹת: לַפְּרוּשִׁים נָתְנוּ סוֹד הָאוֹת וְהַזִּכָּרוֹן, לַצְּדוּקִים נָתְנוּ סוֹד הַמִּקְדָּשׁ וְהַסֵּדֶר, וּלְאַנְשֵׁי הַדֶּרֶךְ נָתְנוּ סוֹד הָאַהֲבָה וְהַהִתְבַּטְּלוּת. וְכָל קְבוּצָה חָשְׁבָה כִּי לָהּ לְבַדָּהּ נִמְסַר הָאוֹר.

וְזֹאת הָיְתָה רֵאשִׁית “בְּרִית הָאַהֲבָה”, אֲשֶׁר תַּכְלִיתָהּ לֹא הָיְתָה לִכְבֹּשׁ אֶת רוֹמִי בַּחֶרֶב, אֶלָּא לְהִכָּנֵס אֶל לְבָבָהּ כְּרוּחַ הַנִּכְנֶסֶת בַּגּוּף. כִּי יָדְעוּ אַנְשֵׁי הַשֵּׁם: כָּל מַלְכוּת הַנִּכְבֶּשֶׁת בְּכֹחַ תָּשׁוּב וְתִמְרוֹד, אַךְ מַלְכוּת הַנִּכְבֶּשֶׁת בֶּאֱמוּנָה, תְּשַׁנֶּה אֶת נֶפֶשׁ הָעוֹלָם.

וְאוּלָם בַּשָּׁנִים הָהֵן כְּבָר נִקְרְעָה מַלְכוּת הָרָקִיעַ לִשְׁנַיִם. מַחֲנֵה מֶטַּטְרוֹן אָמַר: “יֵשׁ לְהַעֲלוֹת אֶת הָאָרֶץ אֶל הָאוֹר דֶּרֶךְ סֵדֶר וּמִשְׁפָּט.” וּמַחֲנֵה סַנְדַלְפוֹן אָמַר: “אֵין תִּקּוּן אֶלָּא דֶּרֶךְ שְׁבִירַת הַגְּבוּלוֹת.” וְהַמַּחֲלֹקֶת הָלְכָה וְגָדְלָה עַד כִּי חָדְלוּ שְׁלִיחֵיהֶם לְהָבִין זֶה אֶת זֶה.

וְכָךְ אֵרַע הַפֶּלֶא וְהָאָסוֹן כְּאֶחָד: רוֹמִי אָמְנָם נָפְלָה לִפְנֵי הָאַהֲבָה, אַךְ הָאַהֲבָה עַצְמָהּ נֶהֶפְכָה לְחֶרֶב בֵּין הָאַחִים.

וְהָרְקִיעִים שָׁתָקוּ.

And it came to pass in the days of the first Caesars, when Rome sat upon her seven hills and believed in her heart that there was nothing above her, that the messengers of the heavens descended unto the borders of Judea. Yet they came not in revealed glory nor in consuming fire, but in whispers and in secret: through dreams, through visions, through men and women touched by spirit.

And they divided the knowledge among many sects: unto the Pharisees they gave the secret of the sign and the memory; unto the Sadducees they gave the secret of the Temple and of order; and unto the People of the Way they gave the secret of love and self-nullification. And each group believed that unto it alone the light had been entrusted.

And this was the beginning of the “Covenant of Love,” whose purpose was not to conquer Rome by the sword, but to enter into her heart as a spirit enters the body. For the People of the Name knew this: every kingdom conquered by force shall one day rebel again, but a kingdom conquered through faith shall transform the soul of the world.

Yet already in those days the Kingdom of Heaven had been torn in two. The Camp of Metatron said: “The Earth must be raised toward the Light through order and judgment.” And the Camp of Sandalphon said: “There is no redemption save through the breaking of boundaries.” And the conflict grew greater and greater, until their messengers could no longer understand one another.

Thus came to pass both the wonder and the catastrophe alike: Rome indeed fell before love, yet love itself was transformed into a sword between brothers.

And the heavens fell silent.
