הבריחה (סיפורו של חפא, ד')

חפא לא האמין שהרגליים שלהם יעמדו במעמסה ויהיו מסוגלות לעשות ולו צעד אחד, אחרי שכל כך הרבה זמן הם נמצאו במצב עמידה ונאבקו שלא לישון, והוא היה בטוח שגופו היה לאבן ולא יישמע לו.
אבל מיד לכשנשפכו אל האור החיצוני החד, פתחו רגליהם כמו בריצה משל עצמן ונשאו אותם לברוח, דוחקים בין עשרות אלפי השבויים שנשפכו מכל עבר, החוצה, החוצה מן המשטח הענק. חפא גם היה בטוח שינסו לעצור אותם, אבל כמו שאמר המוביל, אף אחד לא שם לב לקיומם, והם יצאו מהר מאד מן המתחם, וכשעברו את קו החומה המגנטית שסביבו, הפכה ריצתם לריחוף, בגלל כח המשיכה הקטן של האסטרואיד.

ואז התחיל חפא להתפלא שהם עדיין נושמים, כי מן הרקיע השחור שמסביב היה ברור לו שאין לאסטרואיד אטמוספירה. חפא הגיע למסקנה שהם כבר לא נמצאים בעולם החיים, אלא בעולם הבא.
מאוחר יותר הסתבר לו, שבין החברים שנמלטו איתם, היה אחד בעל יכולת טלפתית גבוהה במיוחד, שחשב בשבילם בועות גז מתאים לנשימה, ובתוכן רצו-ריחפו.

מלמעלה הם השקיפו על המנהרות שהיו בהן, והן נראו להם חיות ורוחשות, כמו תולעים רבות ואולי הייתה זו חיה אחת בעלת שלוחות תולעתיות רבות.

המוביל הביא אותם אל קצה של בליטת סלע ומתחתה תהום. בזהירות נאחזו בסלע והתחילו לרדת בקיר, עד שנכנסו אל תוך מערה. שם הכריעו את חפא ואת חבריו מכאובי הגוף, והם התעלפו.

מעליהם המריאה עננת יתושים אפורים, נושאת איתה משלוח חדש של חיילי כפייה אל החזית.

The Escape (Chapa’s Story, Part 4)

Chapa did not believe their legs would be able to bear the strain or take even a single step. They had been standing for so long, fighting not to fall asleep, and he was certain his body had turned to stone and would no longer obey him.
But the moment they spilled out into the sharp external light, their legs opened into a run of their own accord and carried them away in flight, pushing through the tens of thousands of prisoners pouring out from every direction — outward, outward from the enormous platform. Chapa was also sure someone would try to stop them, but just as the guide had said, no one paid any attention to their existence. They left the compound very quickly, and as soon as they crossed the line of the magnetic wall surrounding it, their running turned into floating because of the asteroid’s weak gravity.

Then Chapa began to wonder that they were still breathing, for from the black sky all around it was clear the asteroid had no atmosphere. He concluded that they were no longer in the world of the living, but in the world to come.
Only later did it become clear to him that among the companions who had fled with them was one with an especially high telepathic ability, who thought for them bubbles of suitable breathing gas, and inside those they ran-floated.

From above they looked down on the tunnels they had been in, and the tunnels appeared to them alive and swarming, like many worms, or perhaps it was one creature with many worm-like branches.

The guide brought them to the edge of a rocky outcrop with an abyss below it. Carefully they clung to the rock and began descending the wall until they entered a cave. There the pains of the body overcame Chapa and his companions, and they fainted.

Above them rose a cloud of gray mosquitoes, carrying with it a new consignment of forced soldiers to the front.
