“Israel Squad”

Tzvi was the one who coined that name, as a mockery of what he saw as my “emotional” approach to the question of Israel and the Jews within the space-narrative. From his point of view, I was far too busy looking for “Jewish meaning” even in places where Chapa insisted there was no necessity for it. According to Chapa, the Yahwehs – those long-range string-pullers of Adamic history – do indeed have an historical file with the Adamic lineage out of which the Jewish ethnos emerged. But that doesn’t make them part of Israel, nor “pro-Jewish.” Their attitude toward the region where the Jews live is purely functional. That place, he said, is for them a power-station on Earth – an energetic–strategic junction. Beyond that, there is nothing essentially unique in the Jewish people in the eyes of the Yahwehs, neither then nor now.

I, on the other hand, believed that the Yahwehs did assign the Jews a role – a kind of mechanism preventing the Adamic species from turning into “the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team of the universe” as Tzvi liked to jeer. Not because they rescue us in every situation, but because it’s theirs – part of a larger master-plan. “You,” he told me, “deep down believe they’re on the Jews’ side – and that there’s something special about the Jews that makes them side with them. But that’s you, not them.” For him, the Jews were a by-product, not a goal. And the idea of some Yahvic “Israel Squad” constantly watching over them didn’t fit his view of the Externals, whom he saw as cold, indifferent, without affection or identification with the Adamics. Even Chapa, in his opinion, suffered from excessive romanticism in describing his relations with the Externals – especially “the Blue,” who in the end threw him out of the spaceship.

Chapa himself was a mixture of both of us. On the one hand, he spoke of the Jews as “a by-product, not an objective,” a geo-cosmic junction at various times. On the other hand, within the framework of “the Erased Table / the Magic Screen,” he marked 1933 as the beginning of the rise of the Übermensch – precisely because Hitler had “overcome the Jews” as the first barrier in his path. Tzvi said: “That’s psychological. In European society the Jews played an imaginary role as a ‘barrier.’ That proves nothing about the Yahwehs.”

In other words – Chapa spoke about cosmic essence, I spoke about assigned function, and Tzvi about social projection. Three layers about the same event.

And yet – the argument with him exposed something deeper: my belief ran deeper than I thought. It wasn’t only that there was something special about the Jewish people – it was that I needed them to be special. And Tzvi – always Tzvi – made sure to remind me that even in the universe, just as on Earth, not everything is meant for us.
