Space darkness, also called hollow darkness is described here and here.
And so it is described:
"A kind of transparent or hollow darkness… that slowly became clear to us that it is a kind of lighting.
Lighting that is not built into our habits."
There are also other explanations, according to which the human brain capacity is not built to perceive all the dimensions in the universe that aliens with higher brain capacity perceive, so the senses given to the brain command do not perceive everything in the universe, at most for a short time, even then it is usually not remembered. This is perhaps one of the reasons why humans have not connected to the telepathic internet.
The earth and our habits of life on it, create a 'bubble' that protects us from the need to perceive everything that aliens perceive and that we are not built for. But when we are outside Earth, or when there is an extraneous load somewhere on the earth beyond what it is used to, this protection does not work and what is perceived in our senses in that place is a kind of chaos that looks to us like darkness, that a slow training of consciousness can help us to orient ourselves at least in part, and so I could in journeys with C in the story of alternative history and in events whose description will come with the help of good galactic reason, to know to recognize sights and things that ordinary eyes are not used to seeing.
